Let’s check your Google index count

Curious to know how many web pages your website has indexed in Google?

This quick tutorial will show you how to check the number of web pages in the search engine, why this is important and how to go about addressing any issues.

No special tools or software are required to get the basic information about your website – Google will tell you.

It all starts with Google crawling your website, looking for web pages and posting to add to their index. Having a sitemap on your website lets Google know what pages to recommend or add to their index. We call these crawlers ‘bots’, as they regularily visit your website for changes; new web pages, changes in content, new images, etc.

How many pages indexed?

To determine the number of web pages Google has in their index for your website, simply use a Google search operator and type in the following in Google Search box: (replace your-website-domain.com with the address of your website)

site:your-website-domain.com

Once Google returns the results, you should see the number above the results.

Why is this important?

This is a good starting metric and benchmark for any good webmaster or SEO consultant, as the information will outline what pages are in the index, and what pages are not.

Discovering that certain pages on your website are not being crawled or index is a good clue that something is amiss on your website; badly structure web page, not enough content, copyright issues or other.

In addition, as most websites are powered by WordPress, many web pages are indexed that should not be. Many of these pages are redundant and may not be effective for your website visitor.

To remove these pages from the search engine, one would add these pages to the website’s robots.txt exclusion file.

What about the ‘WWW’?

Google treats ‘www’ as a domain, while ‘your-website-domain.com’ is also considered it’s own domain.

This time, query Google with your website domain by using ‘www’ in the name.

What you may find is two different values in the results field.

How to resolve indexing issues

The primary tool to use is Google Search Console, formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools.
